ST. JOHN MARY VIANNEY, URIAMGHAT 1998

Location
Uriamghat is 262 km south west of Dibrugarh in the civil district or Golaghat, Assam. The closest town and Railway Station is Sarupathar, 12 kms away from Uriamghat.

History

In 1973 when Sarupathar parish was started, it was looking after the entire area beyond the Garampani forest up to Dimapur. It included the present day parishes of  Sarupathar, Uriamghat and Naojan. In 1982 Bishop Thomas Menamparampil started a parish at Lacitgaon, a politically disputed area. Assam claimed it as its own while Nagaland also staked its claim on the same area.  Earlier it was a thick reserve forest, which people cleared and settled. Fr. Mathew Chanikuzhy was the first parish priest and Fr. Alexius Lakra, his Assistant. The patron of the parish was St. Benedict.  The parish had several communities, which migrated from Sarupathar and other areas. Due to serious disturbances from the other side, the parish had to be closed down in 1992, during the time of Fr. Mathew Panackan. For the next six years, it was being looked after from Sarupathar, while looking for a suitable place to have the parish set up. . In 1998 a plot of land was purchased at Uriamghat, the present site, and the infrastructure is being made. Fr. Emil Baa is the first parish priest at Urimghat. Thus the earlier parish of Lacitgaon is being operated from Uriamghat. A temporary shed was made for the residence of the priest and another shed for the  community to gather for worship. St. Vianney School was started in 2000. The presbytery was blessed in 2002 and the School building is under construction. Uriamghat has 6000 Catholics spread over in 20 substations.
