Location

Tongna is a small township in the Tinsukia district of upper Assam. It is situated 25 km north-east of Doomdooma town at the southern bank of Brahmaputra river. It is bordering Arunachal Pradesh at north and east.  It is only 8 km to the Dirok check-gate leading to the Lohit district of Arunachal. The nearest communication center is Kakopathar, about 7 km away from the parish campus. Dibrugarh, the diocesan headquarters, is about 100 km from the parish.

 History of the parish

Tongna parish was opened on 3rd July  1983 by  Bishop Thomas Menamparampil and the first Parish priest was Fr. Philip Kokkappallil sdb. It was canonically erected on 5th July 1983 with St. Dominic  Savio as the patron of the parish. It was carved out of St. Joseph’s parish, Doomdooma. The parish has about 7000 Catholics spread over in 28 communities (18 villages and 10 Tea Estates). The Catholics are Adivasis. The parish is manned by the Salesians of Don Bosco.

Activities 

The parish runs Don Bosco school and the medium is English.  It was started in 1983 and is up to class V. The parish has also a boarding for Catholic boys. Sisters of Mary Immaculate work in the parish. They started the convent in 1987. The sisters teach in the school, tour the communities and a run a boarding for girls. They also run a dispensary.
