PATRON: ST. JOHN BOSCO

Location: In the Upper Assam district of Tinsukia. Gellapukhri Road, Tinsukia.

Founder: Rev. Fr. Philip Kokkapallil sdb

History of the parish

Tinsukia has been serving as a quasi parish  having regular Sunday Masses since 1979, when the Missionaries of Charity (MC) Sisters opened their convent  at Tinsukia.  The MC convent was opened on 29th September 1979 and Fr. Paulinus Chempalayil sdb, the then Secretary to Bishop, used to come from Dibrugarh to offer Mass for the Sisters. In fact in May 1980, when Fr. Paulinus was transferred to the Cathedral as Parish Priest, the people of Tinsukia gave him a send off.

The parish of St. John Bosco, Tinsukia was opnend on 8th Janurary 1980. It was carved out of the parishes of Dibrugarh, Doomdooma and Naharkatia. Fr. Philip Kokkapallil sdb was installed as Parish Priest by the Episcopal delegate, Rev. Fr. Dominic Barwa sdb. There was already a pucca shed existing at that time. Fr. Philip began an Evening School for adult education  in which around 50 participated. His residence was one of the class rooms.

In 1982 Savio School was started with KG class. The construction of the new school building was begun soon. The School steadily progressed and the first batch of students appeared for matric in 2002.

The foundation stone of the Shrine of Mary Help of Christians was blessed by Rt. Rev. Thomas Menamparampil , Bishop of Dibrugarh, on 31st May 1987. And the Church was blessed on 17th November 1991 by Rt. Rev. Robert Kerketta, Bishop of  Tezpur, in the presence of Rt. Rev. Menamparampil. Salesian Provincial Rev. Fr. Scaria Nedumala  also was present on the occasion. A huge number of people attended the function.

The parish has over 5300 Catholics spread over in 34 sub-stations.
