History
Holy Name Church came into existence in the early months of 1985 when a land over 3 acres was purchased at Cherekapar, an ancient Ahom village, adjacent to the town of Sivasagar. Bishop Thomas Menamparampil appointed Fr. Alex Kapiarumala the first Parish Priest and Principal of the School. The School was formally inaugurated on the 19th January 1986 and a number of local dignitaries were present on the occasion. Classes began on 5th May 1986, with 72 students and four teachers in a temporary building with bamboo walls and tin roof.
Soon a permanent school building was started and within few years the students were shifted to the new classrooms. Since then the school progressed steadily in every respect. In July 1988 Sisters of the Holy Cross, headed by Sr. Carmeline, joined the staff. Sisters’ presence brought better discipline in the school.
Until 1996 the parish and the School catered to all the people of Sivasagar and Nazira. In 1996 St. Peter’s School was started at Nazira
and it looked after three Catholic Communities around that region. In 1998 boardings for boys and girls were started in Sivasagar. Presently the parish campus with all its infrastructure has a majestic look, thanks to all who contributed their mite. The parish has 1200 Catholics spread over in 7 substations.
Nazira was raised to a full fledged
parish in 2006.
