Location:
Sarupathar is situated 250 km south west of Dibrugarh,
in the civil district of Golaghat.
History
Sarupathar was erected a parish in 1973, bifurcating
Golaghat parish. Fr. Terence D’Souza, who was working in
Golaghat parish, was appointed the first Parish Priest
of Sarupathar. In view of starting the parish at
Sarupathar, a plot of land was already purchased
earlier. The Missionary Sisters of Mary Help of
Christians (MSMHC) started staying at Sarupathar, prior
to the arrival of the fathers. The parish is dedicated
to the Immaculate Conception. Two parishes were
opened bifurcating Sarupathar (Lacitgaon, now Uriamghat
(1982) and Naojan (1988).
The
parish started running a ME School in Assamese medium.
It was upgraded into a High School in the year 1985. In
1997 the LP and ME sections of the Assamese were stopped
and the school had only classes VIII – X. In the
meantime, an English medium school was started. Thus now
the parish has a full fledged English medium High school
from Nursery to class X and the Assamese medium from
classes VIII-X.
The
parish has a boarding for boys and the MSMHC sisters run
a boarding for girls.
The
parish has a Catholic population of 3300 spread over in
21 substations.
