History of the parish
Moranhat was the meeting point of three parishes – Dibrugarh, Jorhat and Naharkatia. Due to distance and lack of personnel, the Catholics of Moranhat area were poorly attended to. Efforts were on to open a parish in Moranhat. About 21 bighas of land was procured and the present parish Church was build in 1967. Fr. Joseph Fantin sdb was the first parish priest. When he was asked by the govt. to leave Assam in 1969 , the parish once again became part of Dibrugarh, as no priests were available. In 1971 the parish was separated once again and entrusted to Fr. O.V. Abraham sdb. For some time he looked after the parish from St. Joseph’s Minor Seminary, Dibrugarh and later started staying in Moranhat. In 1974 an English Medium school was started and one year later the Missionary Sisters of Mary Help of Christians opened a convent adjacent to the church land.
At present, the parish has over 4400 Catholics, spread over in 24 substations. The following are the substations with distance from the parish center.
