JAGUN PARISH - 1990

History

A group of six Catholic families from Uriamguri, Naharkatia parish, came and settled down in Jagun in 1950. When Fr. Gerard Mandeville sdb, the Parish Priest of Doom Dooma, heard about their presence in Jagun, he sent Mr. Simon Dhan, the Catechist, to meet them and follow them up. Gradually priests from Doom Dooma started visiting them and attended to their spiritual needs. Soon a chapel was built and they had regular services. The first catechist of the place was Mr. Michael Purty. As the church grew in faith and numbers, a bigger church became a  necessity. A pucca church was built at Sathmile, Jagun by Rev. Fr. Mathew Uzhunnalil sdb, the then parish priest of Doom Dooma and it was dedicated to Blessed Don Michael Rua. Doom Dooma parish continued to look after Jagun community till the parish of Margherita was erected in 1976.

In course of time, few more villages accepted the faith. In 1989 Fr. Paulinus Chempalayil sdb was given the charge of Jagun area and he looked after the communities, residing in Margherita. A plot of land was purchased on 21st July 1989 and on 3rd May 1990 St. Vincent School (English Medium) was started. Fr. Jerome Minj sdb was the first resident priest in Jagun. The present presbytery was blessed on 29th April 1995 by Rt. Rev. Joseph Aind, Bishop of Dibrugarh.

During the tenure of Fr. Shaji Valiaprampil sdb, a boarding for boys and girls was started and it is functioning well.

The parish of Jagun was handed over to Fr. Augustine Toppo of the diocesan clergy on 19th December 2005.

Fatima sisters from Rangia established a convent at Jagun in 2007. They assist in the school and in the parish work.
