ST. MATIN DE PORRES, DHURIA

Dhuria is situated about 30 away from Dibrugarh town, in the civil district of Dibrugarh.

It was a long cherished dream and demand of the people of Dhuria circle, to have a parish Centre of their own. Discussions with regard to the opening of this new parish was on for quite some time. Rt. Rev. Thomas Menamparampil sdb, DD, encouraged the clergy and faithful to locate and finalize the spot for the parish Centre. Consequently the search for the land began. In the mean time Bishop Thomas was transferred and Rev. Fr. Sebastian Karotemprel became the Diocesan Administrator. During his tenure the land was finalized and process of acquisition of land belonging to several people started. Rev. Fr. Leander Kerketta the present Vicar General took a lot of initiative in the transaction of the land.

Rev. Fr. Nathaniel Tirkey, who at that time was doing his mission at Lachitgaon, was approached to pioneer the work at Dhuria. He readily accepted to shepherd the new parish in the making. Subsequently he was made the Asst. Parish priest of Dibrugarh parish to which the Dhuria circle belonged. Then on Fr. Nathaniel began to concentrate on the formation of the new Parish at Dhuria.

On 29th August 1992 Fr. Nathaniel reached Basmotia where he was warmly welcomed by all sections of people. Initially he had to face a lot of hardships. He thrived on the generous hospitality of the faithful for his stay and survival. They offered him accommodation and looked after him.

Gradually, a temporary hut was made in the parish land and Fr. Nathaniel moved in to stay there. Dhuria parish was officially inaugurated by the Diocesan Administrator on 14th. April 1993.

Though it was quite hard for Fr. Nathaniel to live in such conditions, he thought first of the need of having a community Hall to get the flock together for celebrating the Holy Mass and other prayer gatherings. Hence the construction of the Hall began and the Christmas Celebrations of 1993 was conducted in the new Hall, though it was blessed by Rev. Fr. Sebastian K.T. only on 14th. August 1994.

To make the stay of the priest more secure and comfortable, work on a new presbytery was begun and on completion, the same was solemnly blessed by Rt. Rev. Joseph Aind SDB, the new Bishop of Dibrugarh, on 4th. August 1995.

The Ursuline Sisters of Tildonk (OSU) opened a convent at Dhuria in 2001.They run St. Dominic's School, which was earlier run by the laity. They also have a dispensary.
