The parish of Bokakhat was started by Rev. Fr. Chacko Kumplamthanam in 1982, soon after Bishop Thomas Menamparampil came to the Diocese of Dibrugarh. Rev. Fr. Timothy Saldanha too joined him in the pioneering work. The nearest town is Bokakhat which is about 2 kms away, situated on the National Highway No 39. The famous Kaziranga National Park (single horned Rhinos) is about 30 kms from the parish. The parish was primarily opened to break grounds among the Mishing tribal community. Some villages were contacted and in course of time about 25 people accepted the faith. After Fr. Chacko's transfer from Bokakhat in 1992, some of these Mishings went back while others are still practicing. There are five Adivasi communities within the parish. Thus the parish has a Catholic population of over 200.
